 The mission of the School Counseling Program at West Cottonwood Jr. High School is to support the school community by developing and integrating a comprehensive guidance program that will assist students in academic, career and personal/social programs. This will allow children to develop a positive sense of self and become effective students, responsible citizens and lifelong learners.

 As a School Counselor, I perform the following roles in order to promote positive development in academic, career, and personal/social domains:

  • Individual counseling
  • Small group counseling
  • Classroom guidance (i.e. Large group counseling)
  • Attend, participate and facilitate in academic intervention meetings
  • Organize and administer building testing
  • Observe students in various school environments
  • Consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, social workers, and students
  • Respond to school crises or emergency situations
  • Provide information and resources to parents on a variety of issues

                    INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Individual counseling with students is based upon teacher, parent, or self-referrals. Students may self- refer by signing up for counseling in room 30.

                      COUNSELING GROUPS

 Lunch groups are small groups of children (typically 4-5) from the same grade level.  These children are chosen to be part of a group depending on the topic.  Students may sign up for a specific group, teachers or parents may refer, or students could be chosen by the counselor.  Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

 * Divorce

* Changing families

* Study skills

* New students

* Bullying

* Social skills

* Friendship

* Anger management

 Typically, groups meet over the lunch/recess, Study Hall/Advisory and/or PE, once a week, for a period of 6 weeks. Parents will be informed when their child is being asked to participate in a group via a parent permission letter and/or a phone call from the counselor.

***Confidentiality is stressed at our first meeting.

                     CLASSROOM GUIDANCE

Lesson's encourage positive core values and traits including, but not limited to, fairness, responsibility, citizenship, trustworthiness, caring, and respectfulness. During the 2018-2019 school year, Mrs. Stevenson will visit each classroom and Classroom visits are 42 minutes long and full of fun!! Be sure not to miss them!!
